Canterbury Roundup

September 2024

Spring weather has arrived in Canterbury with the Northwest winds and warmer temperatures, having said that have been experiencing occasional periods of cold southerly and easterly winds. Planting of early onion varieties went well, with warmer days making for good planting conditions. Onion seed supply has been an issue this season owing to overseas crop failures, and this has meant growers have had to make some changes to their variety planting plans. It will be interesting to track these changes, and see how the replacement varieties perform over the season.

Planting of early processing and table potato varieties is underway across the region, although recent rain is likely to slow progress.

Vegetables have been coming on fast with plentiful supply meaning very low prices, with some growers saying it's the worst they have seen.

Cereal crops are up and away and we are now well into herbicide and fungicide programs.
