Our third “Fundamentals of Agronomy” grower group meeting was held on the 5th of September. We had a good turnout of around 15 growers from around the district.
The focus of the session was around moisture and nutrient management and highlighted the utility of soil moisture probes as aids in decision-making around planned irrigation and nutrient applications throughout the season. The group then visited a local potato planting, with Roger Blyth discussing issues around potato seed sizing and quality and its effects on the crop, as well as issues of soil compaction and irrigation efficiency. Overall, it was an enjoyable morning, with some interesting and challenging discussions around best practise for irrigation management. We aim to hold these sessions every 4-6 weeks, with topics focusing on the key aspects of agronomy.
