September 2024
Onions in the Pukekohe region are now in the ground following a relatively kind planting period, with regular rainfall allowing crops to establish well. Weed control on early varieties has been challenging as always, owing to the relative softness of these varieties, and reduced herbicide application opportunities due to the weather. Early onions are now bulbing, and our agronomists are picking up early incidence of downy mildew.
No severe frosts, and less wind damage than usual has meant that early potato plantings are in fantastic condition with tubers to around 40mm diameter. The majority of the main crop is to planted in the coming weeks.
A favourable growing season has meant that we continue to see over supply in our lettuce and brassica crops, with a number of crops having been hoed in as a result.
